Kitty's Interlude: Eavesdropping on a Playful Convo

Every once in a while, a song is released that doesn't make you want to jump up and dance but rather, makes you listen - capturing moments, frozen in time. Kitty's Interlude was my attempt to capture a moment from a voice note from Kitty.

Kitty' voice note, a playful, real, and unfiltered mini speech, gets things going. It was the kindling of the track after all. She's laughing and motivating me, "...adulting so well," and somehow, that energy became the bedrock of the song. It's like I wanted the listener to feel like they are eavesdropping on a convo between friends.

Let's tackle the verse
I was leaning into what I was living through at the time, I was in my first year of the PhD and going through the motions of adulting:
"They say Skilly you’re probably over 30 now / You left work and you’re back at school now / You should get a good girl and settle down…”
I was at this crossroads - I left a cushy Project Engineer job, figuring out academia/PhD life, and hearing a lot of everyone's opinions on what I "should" be doing. In some way, I was processing that pressure while also brushing it off.
Then I switch the vibes, highlighting my tendency to overthink things.
"My crush is finally sitting next to me / It’s her eyes that make my palms sweaty…”
I was trying to shift things into the moment - one of those small, nervous moments that you remember. It's simple, but very real. I really wanted the track to not be over produced or overthought, but a candid snapshot of where my head was, caught between "growing up" and just being.
Why It's Called an Interlude
As I was saying before, I didn't want Kitty's Interlude to be overproduced. The beat is stripped-back, the sentences aren't too full, the pads aren't moving too much either - I was trying to capture the "what's this voice note" or a "late-night call" vibe. So in some way, it's more a diary entry than a full single. My voice is also at it's lowest range too, further capturing the relaxed unintentionality of the track.
I wasn't trying to make the "perfect" song. I just wanted to capture the moment and put it out in the universe.
Where to Listen
If you find yourself wondering about societal opinions, nervous next to someone you like... you'll find this song relatable. If you've ever been caught between what society expects from you and what you actually want/feel - this one is for you too.
